This fabulous superfood for dogs is called Green Tripe. It is the stomach lining of ruminant animals (such as cattle or deer) rich in nutrients for dogs. Let's look at the goodies this organ meat provides for our dogs:
Digestive enzymes
Essential fatty acids
Essential amino acids
Protein
Vitamins and Minerals such as B1, B2, copper, calcium, magnesium and selenium
It is helpful to keep green tripe on hand for sick dogs particularly those with kidney issues since the Phosphorous content is low. It is quite palatable for even the pickiest of eaters. Be sure that the green tripe is raw, not bleached, and from a quality source in order to obtain the beneficial factors. Freeze dried tripe is another option if you have difficulty finding a raw source. When first introducing tripe, be sure to offer a small amount at first then increase over time. It is such a nutrient dense food that some dogs need time to adjust. Too much organ meat can cause diarrhea.
What is the only downside of feeding tripe? It stinks! Yep. It does have an odor but you do get used to it.
